John Lambert - About The Job

I employ two personal care assistants to help with my personal care and other household duties.  They live in my house with their own bedrooms, TV and 24 hour access to the internet free of charge. Food is also provided.

To date I have had mostly European girls working for me, staying for about a year at a time. They work four days a week with three days off, of which only two are consecutive, so most days only one assistant is working.

Along with help from other assistants working for me, I train my personal assistants myself in all aspects of my care.  They don't have to have any previous experience in this sort of work.  My personal care is quite straightforward and most people can do it after a week's training with no difficulty.  I certainly don't need constant attention, although my assistant should be available to help me throughout the day and night when on duty.  Even though I am paralysed, I do of course direct my own life.

A typical day would start by getting me up (help with a shower, going to the toilet, getting dressed etc), all with the aid of an electric hoist, after which I generally work on my computer (which I can do myself).  Lunch is then prepared and after that we may spend a day at home, or go shopping, visit friends or maybe I have to attend a meeting as I am involved in several organisations for disabled people. Of course my car is driven by my assistant.  The work obviously involves other normal household duties, such as cleaning and gardening, though nothing too arduous.

Our evening meal (the main meal of the day) is again prepared and cooked by the assistant on duty, but don't worry, I've found out that most young people can't really cook, so I normally help them.  I have to or I'd probably die of starvation!  We have a reputation for eating well in my house!  We normally all eat our meals together, although quite often the assistant with a day off might be away somewhere.
Weymouth has many attractions - sports clubs, beaches, pubs, nightclubs etc and you can take English and other educational courses at Weymouth College.

Working here is interesting and the lifestyle excellent, with plenty of opportunity to make new friends.
